MI5 interference alert on Christine Lee and the United Front
Alleged: Reported or claimed; not established in the public record.
On 13 January 2022 MI5 issued its first interference alert relating to China, naming UK lawyer Christine Ching Kui Lee. The alert says she “knowingly engaged in political interference activities on behalf of the United Front Work Department” of the Chinese Communist Party. The Chinese embassy accused MI5 of “smearing and intimidation”.
Documented
The alert is MI5’s statement. The Guardian reports that Lee’s law firm made donations to Labour MP Barry Gardiner’s office, according to Labour; the BBC and Guardian give different totals, so no figure is stated here.
Claimed, disputed or not established
The interference claim is MI5’s assertion and has not been tested in court. The embassy said China “never seek[s] to ‘buy influence’ in any foreign parliament”. Gardiner’s account is not summarised here beyond the BBC noting the donations were reported.
