OPM breach: 21.5 million background-check records
Alleged: Reported or claimed; not established in the public record.
On 4 June 2015 the US Office of Personnel Management disclosed an intrusion potentially affecting about 4.2 million current and former federal employees. Later that month it reported a separate incident that compromised sensitive background-investigation information on 21.5 million individuals. A Congressional Research Service brief says some have cited China as the source.
Documented
The CRS brief of 17 July 2015 documents the figures and that the director stepped down. About 1.1 million records included fingerprints.
Claimed, disputed or not established
Attribution to China is described by CRS as cited by some. It says it was unclear how the data might be used. The brief does not establish a state actor.
