Kulbhushan Jadhav: the ICJ case
Verified: Documented in primary records or confirmed by reputable inquiry/reporting.
Pakistan’s military court sentenced Indian national Kulbhushan Jadhav to death in April 2017 on espionage-related charges. India filed at the International Court of Justice on 8 May 2017. On 17 July 2019 the Court found Pakistan had breached its obligations under Article 36 of the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations.
Documented
The Court held the Convention applied “regardless of the allegations that Mr. Jadhav was engaged in espionage activities”, and ordered effective review and reconsideration of his conviction and sentence. It did not uphold India’s other submissions.
Claimed, disputed or not established
Pakistan alleges he was engaged in espionage; the Court made no finding on that. No Indian agency is named in the sources opened, so none is linked.
