Havana syndrome: the alleged Unit 29155 link
Unknown: Unresolved; no claim is made.
On 31 March 2024 The Insider, with 60 Minutes and Der Spiegel, published an investigation suggesting that anomalous health incidents, often called Havana syndrome, may originate with directed-energy weapons used by members of GRU Unit 29155. A 2023 US government assessment had said it was “very unlikely” a foreign adversary was responsible, while acknowledging some agencies had only low or moderate confidence.
Documented
The investigation and its documents (for example an accounting record of a 29155 officer’s bonus for work on “non-lethal acoustic weapons”) are published. CBS also reports NIH brain scans found no evidence of physical damage, and that the science remains debated.
Claimed, disputed or not established
The link between the unit and any incident is the journalists’ inference; Christo Grozev, one of the investigators, told CBS the bonus record was “the closest to a receipt you can have”. No government has confirmed it. Unresolved.
