Operation Triangulation and the FSB's claim
Unknown: Unresolved; no claim is made.
Kaspersky said its staff's iPhones had been infected by previously unknown malware in a campaign it called Operation Triangulation. The FSB said the same day that thousands of devices were hit and accused the NSA and Apple of cooperating.
Confirmed
Kaspersky published technical details of the infections. Apple said it has never worked with any government to insert a backdoor into any Apple product.
Claimed, disputed or not established
The FSB gave no evidence for blaming the NSA, and Kaspersky said it could not verify a link to the FSB's allegation. The attacker is not established in the sources opened.
Reported impact
Fed a diplomatic and corporate dispute; no confirmed attribution.
Source strength: A disclosed intrusion plus a state's unproven accusation, not a document leak. Included as an example of an unsupported attribution claim.
