FinFisher / Gamma Group documents
Alleged: Reported or claimed; not established in the public record.
About 40GB of material attributed to the surveillance-software maker Gamma Group, which sells FinFisher, was posted online in August 2014. ProPublica reported that experts it consulted believed the documents were genuine.
Confirmed
A Citizen Lab researcher told ProPublica that dates in the documents match publicly known events, such as the day a Bahraini activist was hacked. Citizen Lab separately published its own mapping of FinFisher servers.
Claimed, disputed or not established
Gamma Group did not comment publicly on authenticity, so the material is "believed genuine" by experts, not confirmed by the company. The leaker's identity was not established in the sources opened.
Reported impact
Researchers used the documents to describe use of the software against dissidents, journalists and activists.
