Classified US military documents, including some about the war in Ukraine, were shared in private Discord chat groups and spread from there to other platforms. The FBI arrested an Air National Guard member in April 2023.
Confirmed
Per Reuters he pleaded guilty to six counts in March 2024 and was sentenced to 15 years on 12 November 2024. An Air Force inspector general report found that some members of his unit and leadership had information about as many as four instances of questionable activity, and 15 personnel were disciplined. Bellingcat and the BBC traced how the files moved across platforms.
Claimed, disputed or not established
Altered copies that circulated afterwards are covered in a separate Debunked entry.
Reported impact
A prosecution, disciplinary action in his unit, and scrutiny of access to classified material.
