Cablegate: US diplomatic cables
Verified: Documented in primary records or confirmed by reputable inquiry/reporting.
Five news outlets began publishing stories from 251,287 US State Department cables dated 1966 to 2010, redacting material before publication. The BBC reported 274 diplomatic posts in the set.
Confirmed
The Guardian reported that the cables came on a 1.6GB memory stick and that Manning was suspected through a chat log. A US military court convicted Manning in 2013 and the sentence was commuted in 2017.
Claimed, disputed or not established
The Guardian noted that the cables contain no assassination plots, a claim sometimes made about them. Cable content is diplomats' assessments, not established fact.
Reported impact
Diplomatic fallout in many countries; the leak led to Manning's prosecution and to long-running legal proceedings concerning WikiLeaks.
