“Wrath of God”: reported Israeli campaign after Munich 1972
Alleged: Reported or claimed; not established in the public record.
After eight members of Black September killed Israeli athletes and coaches at the 1972 Munich Olympics, Mossad chief Zvi Zamir told CBS’s 60 Minutes that Prime Minister Golda Meir told him to draw up a list of targets. CBS reported that Mahmoud Hamshari was killed in Paris by a bomb in his telephone, and that other suspected militants then “started dropping”, including in Cyprus and Athens.
Documented
The Munich attack and Zamir’s on-record account to CBS in 2001 are documented in the interview transcript.
Claimed, disputed or not established
CBS said the killings “had the markings of Mossad hits, but no one could prove it”. Israel has not published an official record of the campaign in the sources opened. Treat the operation’s scope as reported, not proven.
