The Guillaume affair: a Stasi spy in Brandt’s chancellery
Verified: Documented in primary records or confirmed by reputable inquiry/reporting.
On 24 April 1974 Günter Guillaume, an aide in the West German Chancellery, was arrested in Bonn. He was an officer on special assignment of the East German Ministry for State Security. Chancellor Willy Brandt resigned on 6 May 1974, taking political responsibility.
Documented
The Bundesarchiv and the Willy Brandt Foundation document the arrest, the resignation and Helmut Schmidt’s election ten days later. The Stasi’s own internal analysis concluded the case was only the “outer occasion” for Brandt’s resignation.
Claimed, disputed or not established
How far the spy affair rather than other pressures caused the resignation is debated; the archive page itself quotes the Stasi view that it was only the trigger.
