Operation Condor: the Buenos Aires verdict
Verified: Documented in primary records or confirmed by reputable inquiry/reporting.
On 27 May 2016 an Argentine federal court in Buenos Aires announced guilty verdicts against military officers for taking part in Operation Condor, the coordinated cross-border repression of South American military regimes. The National Security Archive provided declassified evidence to prosecutors, including a declassified FBI document.
Documented
The Archive says Condor was founded at a November 1975 meeting hosted by Pinochet’s secret police, DINA, in Santiago, and describes a 900-document database with FOIA records from the CIA, DIA and State Department. The Archive says it provided evidence; the court record itself was not opened.
Claimed, disputed or not established
The Archive’s page is a secondary account of the trial by an organisation that supplied evidence to prosecutors. US officials’ knowledge of Condor is argued in its documents and is not summarised here.
